Ivan Williams


  • Teacher, coach and Athletic director at FHS from 1940-1971
  • FHS Athletic Director from 1955-1971
  • As head football coach, won 83 games, lost 40, and tied 12. He won the league championship in 1944 and 1950.
  • As head basketball coach, won 134 games, lost 75. He won league championships in 1945, 1946, 1947, and 1949.
  • The 1946 squad made it to the Class B state finals losing to St. Joseph High School.
  • Baseball coach from 1940-1946 (WL record unknown)
  • Track coach from 1945-1950 (WL record unknown)

Highlights and Honors

  • Kiwanis Club "Citizen of the Year" in 1947
  • City of Fenton and Fenton School District celebrated "Ivan Williams Day" on October 10, 1969.
  • Coach Williams was the first FHS coach to be inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1965.
  • He was the Grand Marshall of the FHS Homecoming celebration in 1975.
  • The FHS football field was named the Ivan Williams Field on September 12, 1983.
  • A scholarship was established in his name in 1983. It is awarded to the top female scholar/athlete in each FHS graduating class.
  • The new FHS football field was rededicated on September 14, 2007 as Ivan Williams Field.
  • Ivan and his wife Erta had three children Marilyn, Janet, and Ronald. They also had ten grandchildren.

  4. Played on teams that were unbeaten in 18 consecutive games including the 1950 Championship team, which Coach Williams stated to be his best
  5. The teams Dean played on were 31-3-2

  3. Leading Class B scorer in the state of Michigan for 1951-1952 season
  4. Team Captain 1951-1952

Baseball:

  1. Four year letter winner
  2. Played on teams that won 29 consecutive games and three County Championships
  3. Three times as First Team All County
  4. Team Captain 1952

Miscellaneous:

  1. 1952 Marc Peck Scholar/Athlete Award winner
  2. 1951-1952 only athlete to make First Team All County in football, basketball, and baseball
  3. 1952 county Athlete of the Year

 

John Vincent Harrison


Was considered by Mr. Ivan Williams, coach & Athletic Director from Fenton High School for 31 years, as one of the finest & most gifted all-around athletes who ever performed for him. During the years 1943-46, he was a key driving force in achieving 5 Genesee County "B" League championships in football, basketball & track. Furthermore, during a period from 1944-46 Fenton's basketball teams were undefeated in regular season play along with 2 district, 2 regional, 1 quarterfinal and 1 semi-final state tournament victories in accomplishing a school record of 37 wins against but 2 losses. Mr. Harrison was accorded numerous individual honors while earning 11 varsity letters overall:

Football:
All-Conference County "B" League and All-State Nominee (1944-45)

Basketball:
All-Conference County "B" League and All-State Nominee (1945-46)

Baseball:
All-Conference County "B" League (1946)

Track:
All-Conference County "B" League (1946)

A highlight here was the record he established in scoring at least 1 touchdown or more in 17 consecutive games while directly totaling 212 points in rushing and passing in the 1944-45 football seasons. He continued on to the University of Detroit where he earned two varsity baseball letters. In addition, he was involved with numberous (12) Championship teams in basketball, baseball, & platform tennis in the Flint area, Detroit, Chicago and overseas in Korea.

On the national level in Chicago, he won the Flight #3 National Doubles title in platform tennis (1990) which drew contestants nationwide. Vince feels exceptionally honored to have been selected and inducted with this first class of outstanding athletes into the Fenton High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

  6. Honorable Mention All American (Sporting News)
  7. Wignam Wiseman of America - 1960
  8. Scored 24 touchdowns in 1960 to set a new record in the Greater Flint area

Basketball:

  1. Four years (1957-1961)
  2. Earned two letters - 1960 and 1961
  3. Honorable Mention County B Conference - 1961
  4. Coach Leroy Decker called him "the best defender in the league."

Baseball:

  1. Two years (1960-1961)
  2. Earned two letters - 1960 and 1961

Track:

  1. Four years (1958-1961)
  2. Held the FHS 100 yard dash record of 10.0 from 1961 to early 2000
  3. Won the 100 yard dash at the 1961 Regional, 10.0
  4. Won the 220 yard dash at the 1961 Regional, 22.4
  5. Took 3rd in the 100 yard dash at the 1961 State Finals, 10.1
  6. Took 4th in the 220 yard dash at the 1961 State Finals, 22.4

Additional Honors:

  1. Named the Marc Peck Winner in 1961
  2. Awarded a football scholarship to Iowa State University in 1961
