Coach Leroy Decker

Leroy Decker name became synonymous with “fight” and “win” over his thirty years as coach of the Fenton High School Boy team (295-86) and Girls (202-62) His overall record, including two years at Holly, was an incredible 518 wins and only 151 losses. He led the Tigers to fifteen league titles, 23 districts wins, 6 regional wins and took the 1959 Holly team to the Class B State Championship game as well as the Fenton Girls to the 1982 Class B State Championship Game.

Coach Decker was known as a hard driving, highly competitive coach who often willed his teams to victory. He instilled in his athletes great respect for hard work and team play. He demanded that they hustle and follow his game plan. His ability to diagnose game strategy enabled his teams to pull out victories that opposing teams thought were within their grasp.

LeRoy Decker was named Coach of the Year for the State of Michigan twice and was named to five Hall of Fames:

  • Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame
  • Basket Coaches of Michigan Hall of Fame
  • Central Michigan University Hall of Fame
  • Greater Flint Area Hall of Fame

and in 2009 the Fenton Area Public Schools Education Foundation’s Athletic Hall of Fame. We “Fentonites” take this special opportunity to honor this most exceptional coach for his dedicated, highly successful service to Fenton Area Public Schools and the youth of Fenton.
